The month of June has started with a big government announcement. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has prepared a detailed plan for cashless treatment of road accident victims. Under this scheme, the victims can have access to immediate and free medical care of upto ₹ 2.5 lakhs.
The scheme will also be applicable during the “Golden hour”. The Golden hour is a time period after an accident or injury, when an immediate medical or surgical treatment can help save a victim’s life.
The step taken by the government is important given more than 1.5 lakh people died in road accidents last year, especially in hit and run cases, and another 5 lakh were left injured. Of these deaths, 50% of lives could have been saved if timely medical assistance had been given to the victims.
The National Health Authority (NHA) is responsible for implementing the scheme. Under this scheme, more than 21,000 private and government hospitals on the NHA would be covered.
Hospitals can apply for claims which would be handled by a dedicated committee. The claims would be released at a later stage, after proper assessment of the situation and the recovered victims.
